Positive Parenting with DSTV’s School of Laughter

If you are reading this, that means you have survived a year in a pandemic. The most challenging part of the last twelve months was definitely my ability to parent my children. I never in my wildest dreams ever imagined that I would be confined to my home with my daughters as well as responsible for delivering their educational needs to them. I’m the type of mother that looks for the fun in the activities that I give to my children to make learning interactive and fun.

I am very fussy when it comes to screen time so when they do indulge in watching DStv, I ensure that it is beneficial and educational to them. There are a range of incredible shows across the children’s channels that offer easy viewing but also teach important life lessons.

Aara is currently eleven which is that pre-teen age, I was so impressed when I asked her to share her favourite shows with me and why she enjoys them.

These are her favourite shows

The lessons that Aara learnt from this show is that if you don’t play fair, no one will want to play with you.

  • Trolls : The Beat goes on

The message that the Trolls share with their viewers is that you don’t have to do something that you don’t want to even if someone tries to force you to.

  • Big City Greens teaches their young fans that just because you are different from everyone else, it doesn’t mean that you don’t belong with them.

When I asked Zehna (9) about her favourite show and what she learns from it, she did not hesitate to tell me that it is:

  • Corn & Peg because working together is better than working alone.

My little Yuhna (7) has taught me that dynamite comes in small packages so it didn’t surprise me when she chose:

  • Masha and the Bear, as her favourite. The message that she picked up on while watching this show is that just because you’re small, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be brave.

I’m so proud to share this post with you because the content that I am sharing with you is purely from the perspective of my children.

In the last year, DStv  has helped me by catering to my daughters’ emotional needs. During their limited screen time, they have enjoyed quality and insightful viewing.

We may have had to stay away from the world in order to keep everyone safe, but watching shows like the above mentioned were mental reminders of all the beauty that awaits for us beyond quarantine.
